In September 2019, the bar at Simpson’s in the Strand will launch its new menu concept, which explores cocktails designed for different moments in the day. The cocktails range from short and invigorating ‘Sharpeners’, designed to enliven the early evening, to ‘One for the road’ tipples to be enjoyed after a meal in the Grand Divan.
Favouring parity over ostentation, the succinct cocktail list foregrounds recognisable classics and simple design championing Simpson’s in the Strand’s commitment to timelessness. Effortlessly mixing the finest spirits, fruits, tonics and bitters, the bartenders will create understated yet unforgettable serves and a welcoming bar atmosphere.
The cocktail menu will be divided into six sections that draw from whimsical drinking categories: Pick-me ups, Sharpeners, Highballs, G&Ts, One for the road, and Boozeless. Capricious drinkers will be able to choose a libation that suits their mood; a long day can be redefined with an enlivening Pisco Punch (Pisco, peach, grape, gentian, English sparkling wine) from the peppy ‘Pick me up’ section, while Highballs including the Vodka Soda (Vodka, pine, birch, cucumber and watermelon soda) have been designed both to quench thirst and refresh body and mind.
Further examples from the menu include:
Pick me up | Charlie Chaplin | Sloe gin, lime, apricot | £13.50
Sharpener | Death in the afternoon | Champagne, banana, absinthe | £17
Highball | Irish apple | Irish whiskey, fresh pressed apple, rhubarb | £15.50
G&T | Chapel Down pinot noir pink | Dry vermouth, raspberries, Fentimans tonic water | £13.50
One for the road | Rum Alexander | Pineapple rum, coconut cream, lime bitters | £ 15
Boozeless | Cape Cod | Seedlip spice, cranberry, hibiscus, tonic | £8.50
Guests dining in the Grand Divan can retire to the bar after their meal to enjoy a nightcap featuring rich ingredients such as cognac, herbal liquor, maple syrup and tawny port. The ‘One for the road’ section is tailored to the winding down or prolonging – depending on the guest’s predilection – of the evening. It features sipping drinks with a boozy backbone including the Whisky Mac – Single Malt Scotch whisky, ginger wine – and Rum Alexander – Pineapple rum, coconut cream, lime bitters. Meanwhile, the ‘Boozeless’ offering delivers flavoursome compatriots to the alcoholic beverages such as the booze-free Virgin Mary – Seedlip garden, tomato, lemon, spice – ensuring that non-drinkers are never overlooked.
The dedicated G&T section showcases exemplary gins from the bar’s forty strong back bar including its signature Simpson’s London Dry and Simpson’s Old Tom. In G&T form, the gins are invigorated with fresh herbal garnishes – rosemary, gooseberries and juniper berries – that draw out the botanical notes of the gin. Drinkers will also be able to choose from the strong wine list including the finest English Sparkling Wines and a perfectly formed Champagne list.
A comfortable yet elegant bar, with an engaged and attentive bar team, the bar at Simpson’s in the Strand provides a convivial atmosphere away from the bustle of the metropolis. Open throughout the day, it provides the perfect spot for a meeting over morning coffee or a light lunch of top-quality bar food showcasing the outstanding produce from the restaurant kitchen to be enjoyed with friends. As the day goes on, theatregoers can nip into the bar for a quick ‘Sharpener’ before the show or to be engrossed in post-performance discussions late into the night over a Port Stinger.
