Launching on Tuesday 1st May 2018, the Royal Afternoon Tea will offer guests the chance to enjoy a quintessentially British experience, with an extra-special theme. Taking place in the Thames Foyer, under a magnificent glass-domed atrium at the heart of The Savoy, the Royal Afternoon Tea has been inspired by royal weddings past and present.
Created by Executive Pastry Chef, Ludwig Hely, in collaboration with Susan Scott, The Savoy’s in-house archivist, the new Afternoon Tea menu will feature Her Majesty The Queen’s favourite cake of soft chocolate ganache, rich tea biscuits and rum soaked raisins that is based on an authentic historic Royal recipe. Accompanying the chocolate cake will be a Strawberry Tartlet, Croquembouche, Wild Berry Ganache and Traditional Battenberg cake.
In honour of the Royal Wedding and HRH Prince Harry’s military service in this centennial year of The Royal Air Force, The Savoy will be serving Tea for Heroes, an English Breakfast blend. The tea was created for Terry Clark, an RAF veteran of the Battle of Britain and is crafted from two beautiful, independent tea gardens in Darjeeling and Malawi. The profits from Tea For Hero sales will go to the RAF Charity Wing’s Appeal.
Starting at £68.00 per person, the Royal Afternoon Tea will also offer the traditional Afternoon and High Tea favourites, including a range of teas served with finger sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and jam – all served on tiered cake stands. Naturally, accompanying the Royal Tea will be an extra special glass of English Sparkling Wine. The Savoy have teamed up with Rathfinny Wine Estate from the South Downs Of Sussex and Rathfinny’s first vintage of Sussex Sparkling will be exclusively available at The Savoy to celebrate this remarkable Royal moment.
Ever since that awkward moment in 1895 when their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, received two invitations to two luncheons at The Savoy on the same day, practically every member of the Royal Family has visited The Savoy in a private or public capacity at one time or another. For our present monarch, Her Majesty the Queen, and her family, The Savoy has become a familiar venue, ever since the days when as Princess Elizabeth, she and her sister, Princess Margaret came to the hotel to enjoy its nightly dinner, dancing and cabaret. More recently, HRH Prince Charles declared The Savoy officially (re)open on 2nd November 2010, after having been closed for almost three years for extensive refurbishment.
As part of this long standing connection, The Savoy’s American Bar has a tradition of creating a new cocktail to mark each milestone in the royal family’s rich history. To celebrate the marriage between HRH Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle, the American Bar have created ‘The Royal Welcome’, a light and aromatic blend of Bombay Sapphire gin, Italicus Rosolio di bergamotto, Champagne syrup, yuzu, peychauds bitters and English sparkling wine.
Priced at £24.00, The Royal Welcome is available to order individually or as part of The Royal Flight, a collection of historical cocktails all created at The Savoy that span decades and recall some of the world’s most famous weddings.
